MAINE- The Way Life Should Be

I have always had a serious love affair with the state of Maine.
I remember picking wild blueberries with my mom there when I was knee high to a whoopie pie. Jeff and I want to retire there someday, hopefully someday soon!

Until then we can always visit my brother's lake house which was completely renovated last year. Our other brother created the cedar railings over the winter with most of his 9 kids helping to peel the bark. It looks like sculpture, bronze Ralph Lauren-esque sculpture. I like how they used cedar saplings from the area to create the posts to hold the porches-there is a bottom floor you don't see in this too. Using "trees" instead of posts camouflages the support posts completely. You don't even notice them.
My brother is great with all the details, I also like how they used the wavy raw edge cedar siding, super adirondack camp style!

We made these little lanterns out of canning jars and some fine gauge wire looped around the rim, with an attached wire handle. Place some sand in the bottom of the jar with a tea light and hang from your porch, trees or along the garden path. Inexpensive hurricanes that never go out of style...and easy to store!

Ahh..... rowing on a lake, in the vacation state!
I decorated the living room with tag sale and thrift shop furniture (those tables were there-Jeff refinished one/post later). Those club chairs had some mail stuffed under the cushion, they used to live on Park Avenue in NYC! I bought them for $25 bucks each at The Goodwill. Nice life those chairs have had. They retired to Maine too!
Best way to end a day on the lake.
Bonfire, a glass of wine, a hoodie and some lobsters.
The way life should be.
What are your summer plans?

Just beautiful! Maine is one of my favorite places in the world. I spent every single summer up till I was in college at my grandparents lake house. They just sold it three years ago and I miss it every single day, these pictures brought back so many memories- thank you!

I'm going to a small community called Nonquitt in the southern most tip of MA. It borders with RI. No one locks their doors, you can only hear the sound of the back door porch slam. Seashells cover the narrow roads, and there are no stores, just a tiny postoffice, which sells licorice. I swear it's Mayberry. I read alot, stare at the ocean, and buy lemonade from the Nonquitt kids.

Ahhh... we honeymooned in Maine. How I loved your post. We almost got jobs and stayed there. Then someone was kind enough to describe the winters to us, so we flew on home to the South! I think we'll try the tea light jars.

I've never been to Maine but it looks absolutely beautiful. It reminds me very much of the landscape of Northern Michigan. Very woodsy and welcoming. We had plans to go to Maine when we were in Conn. a few years ago, but then had to change them.

We'll probably spend most of this summer at home, but take a few day trips on the weekends. We usually take our family vacation to NC in October.

Wonderful post! I live in Maine and love it. I love the four seasons and the constantly changing nuances of the weather.
Camp life is the best-slowing down, listening to wildlife, sipping wine outside at dusk and hearing the Loons call. Happy to hear that you too love our wonderful state.

My brother just informed me, after he saw this post...his first time to my site I might add..."Hey..what is that? Your own website? " He has spent too much time banging nails.
Anyhoo:
Bad news: they are going to put the lake house on the market!
Good News: they are interested in a place on Block Island.
Guess that means we will be looking for our Maine House sooner than intended or staying with Debra when we need a Down East fix!
