I really miss my surrogate mother Jane, who is down south for a few months. Her birthday is in a couple days and I wanted to send her some New England love.
Rounded up a few leaves while hiking with Cheddar, taped my fave - oak leaf (strong and mighty) - and using a silver pen jotted down my heartfelt greeting. Wha La! A card is born. I put the rest of the leaves in the envelope, on top of the oak, hoping they would fall out when she opens it.
Isn't there someone you know who could use a little leaf?

I have a friend who lives part time in Maine and she always would send me a box of leaves and acorns..I still have them.

What a great idea. I think I will send them to my younger brother who lives in AZ. Thanks for sharing!
I had thought about doing that for a friend who no longer lives around here, but I didn't get around to it soon enough and now most of the leaves have fallen and dried up.
I recently found out that you can preserve them by sticking the end of the leaf stems in a mixture of glycerin and water. You have to let them soak it up for a few weeks, but the leaves will retain their color and won't dry out. I wish I had known that back in September!!
Very touching post, Abby.
How creative!
